Lidya Ivana Memorial - Swing for a Tribute and Charity

Sunday, 15th September brought a day of reflection and celebration at Senayan National Golf club. To celebrate and commemorate the life of former Indonesian female professional golfer, Lidya Ivana, current professional golfers from the Ladies Asian Golf Tour battled over a game of ‘skins’. Accompanying them was local star and former Miss Indonesia, amateur Inesh Putri. Whilst the other amateurs only managed ‘banana skins’ around the pristine parkland course in the heart of Jakarta, the pros were the real attraction, trading blows at the same time as raising funds for various charities in the name of Lidya, who tragically died from acute pneumonia in June 2013.

Lidya Ivana MemorialThe real purpose of the event was to help continue the legacy of the Lidya Ivana Memorial with each of the four golfers playing for the different foundations. Tang Thi Nung of Vietnam striving for the Ebenhezer Foundation, Nontaya Srisawang of Thailand representing the Elang Muda Indonesia Foundation, Chihiro Ikeda of the Philippines fighting for the Lidya Ivana Golf Academy and Miss Inesh Putri for the Shahbat Anak Foundation.

Top billing and the most skins went to the Lidya Ivana MemorialFilipino-Japanese Ikeda who was in fine fettle all day at the tight and short par 69 course, taking more than half of the holes. She capped it by winning the final hole, worth 12 million rupiah alone for the Lidya Ivana Golf Academy.

The tournament, witnessed by Lidya Ivana’s parents, amassed a total of 150 million rupiah, which will go to the four foundations that Lidya Ivana supported. Of this, 20 million was from the memorabilia auction, which included generous donations of Nike Golf memorabilia signed by Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen.

Lidya Ivana MemorialThe day could not have passed without some quiet reflection of a true Indonesian golfing hero.

“LAGT is no longer the same without Lidya,” said Ikeda. “She was very helpful and sometimes did the little things like buying me food or drink. She was that sweet.”

Thang Thi Nung, a close friend, remembered Lidya’s jokes and interaction with all the other members of the Tour.

“My game today is dedicated to her and my presence here is to show my love for her… We will always remember her, we will definitely miss her,” remembered Srisawang.

Inesh, a current Indonesian amateur player, said she would work harder to continue the legacy left by Lidya. “Maybe I should be thinking about becoming a professional faster to carry the name of Indonesia in international golf.”

Lidya Ivana MemorialThe tournament, other than very generously hosted by Senayan National GC, was helped in no small amount by a group of prestigious sponsors, including Garuda Airlines, Nike Golf, Golf House, The Sari Pan Pacific Jakarta, The Sultan Hotel and Residence Jakarta, Philippine Airlines, Workshop 27, Bormindo and Harris Hotels.

Organisers of this tournament and other golf clubs in Indonesia are already thinking of making this an annual event under the LAGT banner. Long live the Lidya Ivana Memorial Tournament, golfers in Indonesia can look forward to a yearly event in memory of our special Indonesian female golf professional who gave so much of her time and energy toward helping the sport develop here in Indonesia. Rest in peace Lidya we will never forget what you have done for the game.
